Upgrades can increase the stats of a piece of gear and at times even add additional features. The value of these upgrades is determined by their tiers, requirements, and the amount of random augmentations applied.
The racial Shield elite Razortail, for example, is often upgraded to increase its lightning absorption capability in PvP and/or provide additional defenses to missile-based designs in the PvM. This makes it more marketable than the non-upgraded version.
Reroll Tokens
Reroll tokens allow you to reroll a purchased best item upgrade like armor, weapon, or ring. This swaps the current item upgrading for one similar one and comes with a different set of extra bonuses. Reroll tokens are an affordable method of upgrading gear. However, they don't keep the level of the original item upgrader mod and any resources wasted aren't refunded.
Survivors can obtain reroll tokens in several ways, including the Mistery Box and rare drops from skulled creatures.
