Although it isn't all that commonly used as a fabric for a kitchen worktop, slate is pretty well-suited to this role. Could be hard and durable, won't matter absorb water at the most rapid rate and everyone warm to touch. It is factual that Slate Roof can become easily scratched with use, but these marks could be removed by wiping the surface with a damp sponge or material.
