This is a poor comparison because bitcoin alone is not a perfect replacement for additional reading visa for reasons completely unrelated to scaling: Bitcoin does not offer instant transactions, credit, or various anti-fraud mechanisms (which some people want, even if not everyone does), for example. One strong use case for using bitcoin for commerce is that it is really easy to send long distances and because of the public/private key setup, people on both ends of the transaction are able to conduct business without really needing to know much about the other’s identity and without the need for a centralized third party.
