Reitman had put together The National Lampoon Show in New York City featuring a number of future Saturday Night Live forged members, including John Belushi. In keeping with Landis, he drew inspiration from traditional Hollywood comedies featuring the likes of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and the Marx Brothers. Ramis drew from his personal fraternity experiences as a member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity at Washington University in St. Louis and was engaged on a movie remedy about school referred to as "First Year", moms teaching sex but the magazine's editors were not proud of it. Filmmaker Ivan Reitman had simply finished producing David Cronenberg's first film, Shivers, and referred to as the magazine's writer Matty Simmons about making movies underneath the Lampoon banner. Kenney met Lampoon author Ramis at the suggestion of Simmons.
