Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.
The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variation (like eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll to get a perfect version.

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item upgrader kit level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader every few weeks.
