The story of Guy Fawkes Night dates back to the 17th century, when a group of conspirators, led by Robert Catesby, hatched a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament during the State Opening of Parliament. The plan, aimed at assassinating King James I and establishing Is Today A Holiday Catholic monarchy, was foiled on the night of November 4, 1605, when Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators, was discovered guarding the explosives in the House of Lords cellar.
