Alex the African Grey Parrot
Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store located on gizmo the grey parrot Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would change our understanding of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with Alex disproved the belief that birds can only imitate human language, but not understand the meaning.
What is Alex?

In his lifetime, Alex learned over 150 words and could recognize colors, shapes materials, and the sizes of objects.
