After a long time with worry and speculation Brazilians and German conservationists managed to successfully reintroduce a couple of couples back into their natural habitat. Their story is inspirational but also rife with backbiting and jealousies.
The first challenge was to get enough birds to be traded. The pet macaws were monogamous, therefore it was crucial to match pairs well.
Range
A South African couple has taken on the mission of saving the critically endangered spix's macaw lifespan macaw. This bird was declared extinct by the United Nations in 2000 due to decades of habitat destruction and poaching. They have a small population of the birds in captivity and hope to release them into the wild near Curaca. They refer to the birds as their little blue companions and have compared their journey to the story of Presley, the last known Spix's macaw purchase in the wild. They call him a true survivor, who lost his family but remained loyal to the area.
