Irene Pepperberg, buying an african grey parrot animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet shop on the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would alter our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with Alex challenged the notion that birds could only imitate human language, but not understand the meaning.
What is Alex?
