Alex the African Grey Parrot
Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet store in the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would alter our perception of avian intelligence. Her work with him challenged the common belief that birds can only mimic human speech, without any understanding of meaning.
