Alex the African Grey Parrot
Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet shop on the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would alter our perception of avian intelligence. Her research on Alex disproved the belief that birds can only imitate human language without understanding the meaning.
