I’ll be sincere and say that I don’t think I’ve ever had an Oreo truffle. They are often discovered rising in soil or on decaying wood, they usually don’t emit the identical aroma as true truffles. The method used is similar to broad-spread practices in black truffle orchards in France: regular soil cultivation, weed suppressant cloth, irrigation (this point is probably notably necessary on this case as soil humidity could also be key) and crushed truffles are also added to the ground to try to add extra spores (see previous blog entry on mating in truffles right here). The Willamette Valley is home to a thriving truffle industry that produces a wide range of black truffles, together with the extremely prized Oregon Black Truffle.
